10-Day Family Safari & Cape Town

Tour Overview

South Africa’s greatest gift to families is its sheer variety – and this itinerary makes the most of every bit of it. Begin with five days in Cape Town, Africa’s most spectacular city, where Table Mountain towers over the harbour, penguins waddle on Atlantic beaches, and whales breach within sight of the shore. There’s something here for every age, from toddlers to grandparents.

Then trade the city skyline for the open sky of the Kalahari. At the Tswalu Kalahari Reserve – South Africa’s largest private reserve – your family will track pangolins and aardvarks, sit with habituated meerkats at sunrise, ride horses through ancient desert landscapes, and discover some of the oldest rock art on the continent. It is extraordinary, rare, and entirely unlike any other safari destination in Africa.

This is the perfect two-part family adventure: City. Desert Safari. Every detail thoughtfully designed so that parents relax, children are captivated, and grandparents are comfortable. With Chui Safaris, the whole family travels as one.

Cape Town shines from October through April – warm and sunny, ideal for the Peninsula, Hermanus whale watching (September–November is peak season), and outdoor family adventures.

Tswalu Kalahari game viewing is remarkable year-round. The dry winter months (May–September) offer cooler morning drives and excellent wildlife visibility as animals gather around water sources. The summer months (October–March) bring lush red dunes, abundant birdlife, and the best chance of spotting rare nocturnal animals like aardvarks and pangolins.

For families, the October–November window is especially rewarding – Cape Town is at its spring best, Hermanus whale season is in full swing, and the Kalahari is alive with activity. School holiday periods (June/July and December) are popular – early booking is essential.

  • Families of all configurations – nuclear families, extended families, and multigenerational groups
  • Parents looking for a safari where children are genuinely catered for, not just tolerated
  • Families wanting a perfect city-and-bush balance without a gruelling pace
  • Wildlife enthusiasts of all ages – the Kalahari offers species no other reserve in Africa can match
  • Grandparents travelling with grandchildren who need comfort, accessibility, and unforgettable shared experiences
